J.K. Rowling was at rock bottom. Broke. A single mother on welfare. Rejected by twelve publishers.
She was paralyzed by fear and self-doubt. “Maybe I’m not good enough. Maybe I should quit.”
But she didn’t. Instead, she unconsciously used a powerful hack: she stopped focusing on herself and instead focused on sending the script…just one more action.
That simple shift changed everything. Bloomsbury took a chance, and Harry Potter became a global empire.
Why Fear Paralyzes You
Here’s the real problem:
When you’re scared, your brain puts a spotlight on you.
Your performance, your flaws, what others will think. That spotlight amplifies the fear until you freeze.
→ What if I fail?
→ What will people think?
→ I’m not ready.
The more you focus on yourself, the stronger fear’s grip becomes.
But here’s the hack: Shift the spotlight away from yourself.
The Spotlight Shift Hack
Instead of thinking about your fear, think about the action's purpose or outcome.
Focus on service: Who benefits if you succeed?
Focus on process: What’s the next small task in front of you?
Focus on curiosity: What can you learn by doing this?
This shift disrupts your brain’s fear response, shrinking the mental "threat" and unlocking action.
How It Works in Real Life
Here’s an example from someone I coached:
He struggled with networking, especially with people he perceived as more successful. His mind would race:
→ What if I don’t have anything interesting to say?
→ What if they think I don’t belong here?
The fear of awkward silences and judgment kept him stuck.
I gave him this reframe:
“Stop focusing on yourself. Shift the spotlight onto them. Be genuinely curious. Ask thoughtful questions and authentically learn about their story, goals, or experiences. The pressure to ‘perform’ will disappear, and you will naturally build deeper connections.”
This immediately clicked with him and he implemented this practice going forward.
Why This Hack Works
Your brain can only focus on one primary thing at a time. When you shift the mental spotlight away from your fear and onto the goal, process, or impact, fear loses its power.
You regain control. Action feels easier.
How to Use the Hack Today
Next time fear creeps in, do this:
Name the fear:
What is your brain spotlighting? (e.g., What if I fail? What if I’m judged?)
Shift the spotlight:
Ask yourself:
Who benefits if I act?
What’s the next actionable step?
What can I learn from doing this?
Act immediately:
Don’t wait for the fear to fade. Take one step forward with this new focus.
Progress Beats Perfection
People often wait until they "feel confident" to act. But that’s backwards.
Confidence is built through small, repeated actions that reinforce: I can handle this.
Remember:
Courage isn’t fearlessness. It’s moving forward despite fear.
Ask Yourself:
What’s one fear that’s currently spotlighting in your mind?
Shift your focus. Who benefits from your action? What’s the smallest next step?
Start there.
Remember…
Fear is just a misplaced focus. Shift the spotlight, and you will stop overthinking. Act, even when you’re scared.
Make moving forward despite fear your default setting.
